National Mutt Day

National Mutt Day is celebrated twice a year on December 2 and July 31 to call attention to the joys and surprises of having a mixed-breed dog.

With the support of the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC), these two days for acknowledging mixed breed dogs were set in 2005 by animal welfare advocates to coincide with times of the year when shelters are often forgotten and so many animals miss the chance to have a home.

Millions of dogs end up in shelters each year through no fault of their own. As it becomes more difficult to buy groceries and pay bills, more pets are being relinquished, and shelters are being overwhelmed.

More than 80% of shelter dogs are mixed. The possible combinations are endless, as are their many delightful personalities. They all deserve a second chance to be adopted into a loving family.

How can you celebrate National Mutt Day?

  • Adopt a mixed breed dog. Find that one-of-a-kind dog who’s right for you.
  • Help a lonely friend or relative find their shelter pet companion.
  • Volunteer at a shelter. They always need smiling faces and walkers to brighten the lives of those who wait for a home.
  • Donate money, pet beds or other items to shelters. Ask what specific things they need and start a drive to collect them.
  • Learn how you can help your local pet rescue group, perhaps as a foster parent.

And of course, praise your own adorable mutt. Make it a special day to appreciate all you have been given by this furry friend that is overflowing with unconditional love.
